Let's Get Acquainted!

Every country and every city has their own flirting and dating rituals. What may seem completely innocent in one culture may be unacceptable in another. Here are some rules for meeting members of the opposite sex in the Russian capital.

Of course it's possible to pick up women on the streets of Moscow, however, more often than not this will turn out to be a fruitless endeavor. While such an attempt is not outside the bounds of correctness, women will usually turn down offers for the sake of being cautious and avoiding unpleasant situations.

There is no point in trying to impress a girl with a luxury car. Moscow women will never get in a car belonging to a stranger no matter how beautiful or expensive it may be. Cars slowly approaching the curb attract, perhaps, only women of “easy virtue”.

Surprisingly, meeting people оn public transport is much more promising. Maybe because a neighbor on a crowded subway car may seem safe, or maybe because there's simply nothing else to do during a long commute. Either way, the chances are great. They increase even more if you stand up to offer your seat to a woman, protect her from the crowds of people on a jolting subway car or bus, or find another way to prove yourself a gentleman.

Clubs and bars are ideal places for dating. Muscovites of both genders frequent clubs and bars not only to drink and hang out with friends, but also to find a partner – for the night or for the rest of their lives. Just stay away from the clubs that are overly expensive. The only women you'll find here will be gold diggers who, if spoken with, will do nothing for you but hurt your self-esteem.

Restaurants are not the place to pick up women. If you see a girl sitting alone at a table, most likely she is waiting for a friend or her boyfriend and it's very unlikely that she would interrupt her plans to speak with a stranger.

Most employees in the offices of Moscow will agree that a healthy dose of flirting can only improve the workplace. Complimenting a colleague's nice tie or new dress, telling jokes and invitations for coffee after work are an integral part of everyday work in Russia's capital. Don't be afraid to compliment your colleagues; you won't be sued for sexual harassment.
