Heading out of Moscow

The suburbs are a traditional destination for Muscovites in need of an outing – for a day, for a weekend or even for a week or two. Even now, this is still a popular leisure activity. And if you are in the capital for awhile, you should also follow the local tradition and head out of the city to get up close and personal with Russian nature. 

The capital has many shops for you to stock up on everything from hunting, fishing, kayaking and rafting equipment, to hiking gear and picnic ware. To do so, Moscow offers you three main options:

 1.    Buying online 

Pros: saves time. 

Cons: what you see is not necessarily what you get (sizes, texture, quality of the materials and even colours). 

How to do it – compare some of the specialised sites for prices, brands and quality and order from them. In a couple of days, you will receive your goods (or very often the next day) at home or at work. You can pay by credit card or in cash to the courier.

Check out specialist forums for advice from local experts, letting you in on the best brands available.

Where to buy:

Extreme – the largest specialised store of its kind, with three floors of outdoors goods to choose from. You can find everything here for every activity from climbing and diving to surfing. Directions: shuttle bus or public transport from the metro station Rechnoi Vokzal. 

Decathlon –famous French chain store specialising in all sports and leisure equipment. Moderate prices and a wide selection of goods are on offer, whether you are planning a picnic or a five-day trek. Locations: metro. Rimskaya, Krasnoselskaya, Altufievskaya. 

Trial Sport - for all extreme sports aficionados–stocks everything for snowboarding, skateboarding, mountaineering, rock climbing, rollerblading as well as skiing and cycling. Product selection and prices are available on their internet site- This is the nearest store to the city centre, located on Olympiyski Avenue. 

3.    Buying from different stores 

Pros: choose on high quality goods to suit your personal tastes. 

Cons: spend more time and energy finding what you need. 

Alexika: known for its quality and spacious tents. Incidentally, their website also has a list of helpful shops where you can find tourism and leisure equipment.

Salomon: specialised in winter sports, specifically skiing and snowboarding. Jackets, skis and other accessories can be purchased in the sports store "Olympiyski" or at more affordable prices in the chain store Sportmaster, located in many districts of the capital.

Tatonka: popular rucksack brand. It can be found in all of the city’s camping and tourist shops. Their website also provides an exhaustive list of stores stocking their goods throughout Moscow.

Expeditsiya store – large network of specialised shops stocking picnic, hiking, travel, and country gear. "Expeditsiya" also offers a wide range of gift items and is renowned for its quirky and original souvenirs.

Decostop store – the number one store for scuba gear: masks, snorkels, wetsuits, helmets, underwater guns for hunting, photos and video cameras for underwater athletes.

Rybolov – stocks everything a fisherman could dream of.
